Your mental health assessment
About an hour by video with a GP. Time to properly talk through what’s happening.
Start your plan
Treatment can start straight away if your GP thinks it’s right for you, with regular reviews after that.
A proper assessment, not a quick chat
Depression, anxiety and sleep problems are among the most common things Australian GPs help with. Your first appointment is a full mental health assessment, so your GP understands what’s going on before you make a plan together.
- About an hour, so nothing’s rushed
- A plan you agree on together
- Treatment can start the same day if it’s right for you
- Regular reviews with your GP after that

Your GP makes the call
A consultation doesn’t guarantee a prescription. Your GP recommends what’s clinically appropriate for you, and you decide together.

Frequently asked questions
Can a GP really help with my mental health?
Yes. Depression, anxiety and sleep problems are some of the most common things GPs assess and treat in Australia. A GP can diagnose, start treatment and keep reviewing you over time.
How long is the appointment?
Your first appointment is a full mental health assessment of about an hour. That gives you and your GP time to properly understand what’s going on before making a plan.
Is it bulk billed?
Bulk billed for eligible patients. If you’re not eligible, a consultation fee may apply, and we’ll confirm it with you before your consult.
Can I start treatment straight away?
If your GP thinks it’s right for you, yes. Treatment can start from your assessment. That may include medication, but a consultation doesn’t guarantee a prescription. Your GP decides what’s clinically appropriate.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can request an appointment yourself.
Is this an emergency service?
No. If you or someone else is in danger, call 000. For 24/7 crisis support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
