Questions, answered.
What people usually ask before booking.
Can a GP really help with my mental health?
Yes. Depression, anxiety and sleep problems are some of the most common things GPs assess and treat in Australia. A GP can diagnose, start treatment and keep reviewing you over time.
How long is the appointment?
Your first appointment is a full mental health assessment of about an hour. That gives you and your GP time to properly understand what’s going on before making a plan.
Is it bulk billed?
Bulk billed for eligible patients. If you’re not eligible, a consultation fee may apply, and we’ll confirm it with you before your consult.
Can I start treatment straight away?
If your GP thinks it’s right for you, yes. Treatment can start from your assessment. That may include medication, but a consultation doesn’t guarantee a prescription. Your GP decides what’s clinically appropriate.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can request an appointment yourself.
Is this an emergency service?
No. If you or someone else is in danger, call 000. For 24/7 crisis support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Who will I see?
An AHPRA-registered Australian GP with an interest in mental health. You see them by video, from wherever you are in Australia.
What happens in the assessment?
Your GP asks about what’s been happening, how long it’s been going on, what’s been tried and what you’d like to change. They’ll use standard questionnaires, check on your safety, and may arrange blood tests to rule out physical causes. You finish with a plan.
Can I get a mental health care plan?
Since 1 November 2025, the Medicare rebate for psychology sessions under a mental health care plan needs the plan and referral to come from your usual GP or the practice you’re registered with through MyMedicare. Your GP will talk you through your options. See our care plan guide for more.
What if I need a specialist?
If you need specialist care, your GP can refer you.
What do I need for the appointment?
A phone, tablet or computer with a camera, a private space where you can talk, and your Medicare card if you have one.
Is my information private?
Yes. Your information is handled under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. See our privacy policy for details.
